Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Drama

The champion entered the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.

Play-Off Climax

That led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
