‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s journey from gurney to goals with the Basque club

Thehe initial occasion the Spanish forward played in English soil, an teenage appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he took the field in England, against the Black Cats two months later, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. An excellent finish, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the attacker reveals, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea how true it was, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, the Basque Country, the morning session is ready to commence; after it, the short journey to the airport and a further journey to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the club, partially owing to the pressures of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it challenging enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. Born to the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a torn cruciate, dropped, a demotion and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to live the best days of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the first team but each step you progress through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his first game and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles 200,000 times. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in the pandemic season, aged 23, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone in your position, recall is possible. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
