‘He has come back from the dead’: Chevy Chase was in eight days in a coma during the health crisis.

Chevy Chase experienced a “near fatal” cardiac event that resulted in him being put into an medically induced coma in 2021, per details from a new film about the entertainment icon.

As documented in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the star of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars twice, remained in care for five weeks in the hospital.

“He wasn't right, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we go to the ER. His heart stopped. During those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; which is when the heart muscles get weaker, and they are unable to pump as much blood through the body with each beat.”

Medical professionals then put him into a state of unconsciousness for eight days, before warning his child, Caley: “He may not recover. We don’t know how cognizant he’ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.”

“When he woke up, all he could do was use his vocal cords,” she stated further. “He has essentially been resurrected.”

The actor personally has revealed that he has suffered recall difficulties since his medical ordeal, and in the film he does not recollect some of his past professional and personal controversies, including a fight with fellow comedian Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live backstage area.

Chase said he was “disappointed” by his exclusion from the 50th anniversary special of SNL earlier this year, at which he was in the crowd but not on stage.

“To be frank, it was disappointing,” he said. “This is probably the first time I’m saying it. But I assumed that I should have been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman took the stage, I was wondering as to why I was not. I wasn't invited. Why was I overlooked?”

Now 82, Chase, came close to death in 1980 when he was shocked by electricity on the set of Modern Problems, an accident which precipitated a period of clinical depression.
