The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. But, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are serious Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
