TikTok Offers The Community Power to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This step comes as the company revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement aligns with a surge in content created by AI, fueled by recent video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is considered mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, bulk-generated content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Overall, in excess of 100 m media items are uploaded to the app each day, making AI content a minor portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the topic control feature in the app and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be modified under the tool encompass politics, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies require content makers to tag convincing AI-made content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.

In addition, the service will now add an AI-generated label to content made using its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for identifying artificial media. This measure is designed to deter users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and groups to develop learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist non-profit groups dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, following debate over intentions to lay off numerous safety staff in Britain. TikTok is expected to eliminate hundreds of positions in its trust and safety division in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by removing the most distressing content before it gets reviewed by people. TikTok announced a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

It is vital to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference process content quickly.”
