British authorities has included eleven more destinations to its official advisory register regarding the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol toxicity.

Just recently, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, in response to a number of serious incidents such as the deadly death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Tourists

Government representative a senior official emphasized that all travellers should recognize the indicators of methanol contamination.

"When you are having drinks abroad, opt for trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer said.

"If something seems unusual, for example a hangover that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – get medical help immediately."

The complete roster of nations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
