US Justice Dept Reiterates Petition to Unseal Jeffrey Epstein Grand Jury Documents
The Department of Justice has once again obtain access to federal jury records from the investigation into the late financier, which resulted in his sex-trafficking charges in 2019.
Lawmakers' Decision Prompts New Court Initiative
The recently filed petition, prepared by the US attorney for the Manhattan district, declares that legislators made it clear when endorsing the publication of probe records that these judicial documents should be made public.
"The legislative move overrode existing law in a manner that allows the release of the federal jury documents," explained the justice department.

The filing petitioned the New York federal court to proceed quickly in making public the records, pointing to the 30-day window established after the bill was approved last week.
Previous Motion Met Denial
However, this new initiative comes after a earlier request from the former administration was rejected by the presiding judge, who cited a "significant and compelling reason" for maintaining the materials under wraps.
In his summer decision, the judge observed that the 70 pages of sealed records and supporting materials, including a digital presentation, call logs, and correspondence from victims and their lawyers, are minimal compared to the federal extensive collection of investigative documents.
"The authorities' hundred thousand pages of Epstein files overshadow the limited grand jury materials," wrote the magistrate in his judgment, adding that the petition appeared to be a "diversion" from disclosing documents already in the authorities' custody.

The confidential documents mainly include the account of an FBI agent, who served as the lone witness in the grand jury proceedings and reportedly had "limited personal awareness of the case details" with testimony that was "primarily secondhand."

The magistrate identified the "potential dangers to affected individuals' protection and confidentiality" as the compelling reason for preserving the materials restricted.

A similar request to unseal grand jury testimony concerning the legal case of his associate was also rejected, with the judicial officer observing that the prosecution's motion incorrectly indicated the grand jury materials contained an "undiscovered wealth of hidden facts" about the investigation.

The current motion comes following closely the designation of a new prosecutor to probe his associations with well-known politicians and several months after the dismissal of one of the principal attorneys working on the legal matters.
When questioned about how the current probe might affect the release of related documents in official hands, the top legal official commented: "We cannot comment on that because it is now a ongoing inquiry in the Manhattan jurisdiction."
